Abstract: As AI adoption accelerates across industries, workplace competencies are rapidly evolving—with direct implications for what, how and where students learn. The teacher’s role is evolving, and educators increasingly leverage AI to design and monitor meaningful learning experiences. While research confirms effective learning environments significantly impact K-12 student outcomes, schools are asking: Do we need to adapt the design of learning spaces to harness AI’s potential while preserving irreplaceable human elements of teaching and learning? Insights from literature, educators, technology professionals, students, and a space audit were synthesized to understand whether and how K-12 design should adapt to support evolving classroom dynamics, teacher mobility, and student peer interaction. Findings revealed that emerging pedagogies and learning needs demand adaptive, interconnected learning environments—not simply adding technology to traditional classrooms. AI-enabled environments support seamless transitions between analog and digital work while prioritizing human connection over digital dependency. The presenters will share a practical design framework where space, pedagogy, and educational technologies are considered simultaneously to best support inquiry, creation, critique, and reflection in integrated learning ecosystems.

Her work bridges academic and applied research—with a social ecology lens and a focus on health promoting, sustainable design. Kimari conducts pre-/post-occupancy evaluations to understand how built and landscaped environments are performing, and she helps design teams create spaces that have a positive impact on the people who use them.
David is an educational designer, strategist, and founder of David Jakes Designs LLC. With four decades of experience as a teacher, technologist, school leader, and design consultant, he helps schools reimagine their environments and experiences to redefine teaching and learning. Blending design processes, educational innovation, and a deep understanding of the learning experience, David guides organizations in creating future-ready learning spaces and systems. He bridges education and architecture, emphasizing inquiry, creativity, and human-centered design.
Rosiella is Senior Project Manager, Bond Program at Santa Clara USD. Throughout over 20 years managing K–12 construction/modernization projects across the San Francisco Bay Area, she brings deep expertise delivering complex educational facilities. In addition to her pivotal role with the three new schools on the 55-acre Agnew K-12 campus, she’s led a 30-site IT infrastructure upgrade for Fremont USD’s Measure E Bond Program and worked with many K-12 and community college districts.
Eric is Director of Facilities and Construction for Palo Alto USD, overseeing planning, modernization, and delivery of capital improvement projects districtwide. With a Bachelor of Architecture from California Polytechnic State University San Luis Obispo, he served school districts for several years as both an architect and construction manager before becoming a bond program director. Eric works closely with district leadership and the community to implement facilities that support student learning and long-term operational goals.
