Abstract: School safety and security centers around the five phases of emergency management. Architects have been active participants in mitigation and response focused on reducing property damage and harm to occupants for centuries. School administrators, law enforcement, and mental health professionals have been actively involved in prevention efforts for years. It’s time for school designers to join the conversation and advocate for a seat at the prevention table. Come learn how school design should include strategies from all five phases of emergency management and how trauma-informed principles provide a pathway for architects to advocate strongly for spaces that foster human connection as a key prevention strategy in safety and security efforts.
