Abstract: Engagement is not a personality trait. It is a design outcome. Research on learning environments shows that students’ ability to focus, collaborate, create, and take ownership of their learning is directly and measurably shaped by the physical spaces in which they work. Traditional rows of desks often force a singular, passive learning style. Environments designed with flexibility, agency, and purpose in mind produce students who are more engaged, more collaborative, and more invested in the outcomes of their work.

Learning Objectives:

1. Apply research on engagement-driven learning environments to distinguish between spaces that accommodate multiple activities and spaces that genuinely produce student agency, collaboration, and investment in learning.
2. Identify the specific design elements — flexible furniture configurations, writeable surfaces, technology infrastructure, movement affordances, and hands-on learning zones — that most reliably shift student behavior from passive to active.
3. Evaluate learning environments for the degree to which they support student agency: the ability to choose how and where to work, access needed tools and materials, and self-regulate within the learning space.
4. Connect learning environment design decisions to specific engagement and achievement outcomes — building a persuasive, evidence-based case for design investment that resonates with educators, administrators, and community stakeholders.
