Call to Action:
Broaden the design and educational communities’ awareness of equity and inclusion. Promote measurable criteria for how design can increase equitable inclusion and full participation across human differences
Abstract: The Community-Informed Design for Innovative Environments (CIDIE) Standard is a new certification program that supports designers and building owners in gathering insights through community engagement and translating the data into tangible design solutions. This presentation explores the application of the CIDIE Standard in case studies of two nationally significant school projects. Dr. Victoria Lanteigne, Founder of CIDIE and the Chief Executive Officer of Avant Buildings Lab, will open the panel with an introductory overview of the CIDIE Standard and outline criteria required for CIDIE Certification during design and post-occupancy phases. Nicola Springer, Partner & Managing Director, PK-12 Practice at Kirksey Architecture and Marcus Adrian, Partner & Market Lead – Learning Environments Innovation at Mackey Mitchell Architects, provide a deep dive into the community-engaged design processes used in the design of two nationally significant school projects. After reviewing the process and outcomes of each project, panelists will then engage in an interactive discussion about how the CIDIE Standard informed overall design strategy and influenced specific decisions throughout all phases. Topics will begin with the identified CIDIE Goals for each project that emerged from community engagement, and trace those goals through incorporation into design. Additionally, Ms. Springer will discuss the intent and significance of adopting the CIDIE Standard across a portfolio of Kirksey projects. The audience will be engaged throughout the discussion with time for Q&A.
